Wishlist Wednesday #3

Wishlist Wednesday, hosted by Pen to Paper, is a weekly meme that keeps track of the books that have been on you'r wishlist for a long time.

Falling Under (Falling Under, #1)

Goodreads:
Theia Alderson has always led a sheltered life in the small California town of Serendipity Falls. But when a devastatingly handsome boy appears in the halls of her school, Theia knows she's seen Haden before- not around town, but in her dreams.
As the Haden of both the night and the day beckons her closer one moment and pushes her away the next, the only thing Theia knows for sure is that the incredible pull she feels towards him is stronger than her fear.
And when she discovers what Haden truly is, Theia's not sure if she wants to resist him, even if the cost is her soul.

Review: The Merchant's Daughter

The Merchant's Daughter

The Merchant's Daughter

Melanie Dickerson

Zondervan

Goodreads:
An unthinkable danger. An unexpected choice.Annabel, once the daughter of a wealthy merchant, is trapped in indentured servitude to Lord Ranulf, a recluse who is rumored to be both terrifying and beastly. Her circumstances are made even worse by the proximity of Lord Ranulf's bailiff---a revolting man who has made unwelcome advances on Annabel in the past.Believing that life in a nunnery is the best way to escape the escalation of the bailiff's vile behavior and to preserve the faith that sustains her, Annabel is surprised to discover a sense of security and joy in her encounters with Lord Ranulf. As Annabel struggles to confront her feelings, she is involved in a situation that could place Ranulf in grave danger. Ranulf's future, and possibly his heart, may rest in her hands, and Annabel must decide whether to follow the plans she has cherished or the calling God has placed on her heart.

Review:
Thanks to NetGalley and Zondervan for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Retelling of Beauty and the Beast. I just love retellings, and I love books in this time zone.
After Annabel Chapman's father, a wealthy merchant, dies, her family is left with nothing but debt. Annabel choses to work as a servant to the new lord of her village, Lord Ranulf le Wyse rather than marring the repulsive Bailiff Tom. Annabel has heard tales of the lord as a monstrous beast, while he is scarred terribly he couldn't be more "beastly". She begins to respect him; the lord even becomes a haven for Annabel when the bailiff sends unwelcomed advances toward her. While Annabel never intended to marry anyone, she wanted to become a nun, but her family couldn’t pay the expenses, she can't help the feelings that start to grow for Lord le Wyse.
I’m not a huge Christian fan, but this book was easy to read even though Annabel reads from the bible every night but I kind of skimmed over those parts. Even though I’m not a fast reader, I read this book within a day.

Free Friday #12

Today's free book for the Nook is...
The Liberation of Alice Love
The Liberation of Alice Love
by Abby McDonald

Goodreads:
Clever and elegant, this novel forces you to think about how far you'd go to find the truth, and how many lies you'd tell to uncover it. Alice Love keeps her life (and boss, and family) running in perfect order, so when her bank card is declined, she thinks it's just a simple mistake. Sadly, someone has emptied her bank account, spending her savings on glamorous holidays, sexy lingerie, and a to-die-for wardrobe, and leaving Alice with lots of debt. But she soon wonders if perhaps her alter-ego's reckless, extravagant lifestyle is the one Alice should have been leading all along...
Praise for Abby McDonald:
"You can almost feel her copious talents bursting at the seams."

"Thank you." She smiled, bobbed a quick curtsy, and fled from them, her face tingling with a self-conscious blush.

Ashfall

Ashfall (Ashfall, #1)

Ashfall

Mike Mullin

Tanglewood Press

Gooreads: Under the bubbling hot springs and geysers of Yellowstone National Park is a supervolcano. Most people don't know it's there. The caldera is so large that it can only be seen from a plane or satellite. It just could be overdue for an eruption, which would change the landscape and climate of our planet.
Ashfall is the story of Alex, a teenage boy left alone for the weekend while his parents visit relatives. When the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts unexpectedly, Alex is determined to reach his parents. He must travel over a hundred miles in a landscape transformed by a foot of ash and the destruction of every modern convenience that he has ever known, and through a new world in which disaster has brought out both the best and worst in people desperate for food, water, and warmth. With a combination of nonstop action, a little romance, and very real science, this is a story that is difficult to stop reading and even more difficult to forget.

Review: Alex is you’re average teenager, he thinks his little sister is a brat, argues with his mother and would rather play World of Warcraft than do his homework. When his family decides to go to his Uncle’s farm, he stays home. A whole weekend home alone! It’s not going to be as peaceful as he thinks. Out of nowhere something falls through his roof and knocks him out, when he regains consciousness he finds himself stuck under his desk, with his house on fire, he manages to escape, retreating to his neighbor’s house for refuge. Once there he bunks down for a long and uncomfortable night. In the morning he discovers its pitch dark out and there’s a weird white ash covering everything. They soon discover a super volcano in Yellowstone National Park has exploded. Electricity is out, water has stopped, and vehicles don’t work. He stays at his neighbor’s house for a while until resources get tight and intruders break into the house with deadly intentions, making Alex flee. He makes the choice to travel to Warren to his uncle’s farm to find his family. Along the way he faces a homicidal lunatic name Target who cuts a gash into his side, and some gracious people along the way, including Mrs. Edmunds and her daughter Darla, who find him clinging to life in their barn. Alex is nursed back to health and he returns his gratitude by helping on their farm. When tragedy strikes again, they find Darla’s mom dead, Darla decides to accompany Alex along the journey to find his family. Food runs low and in their search for food and water they come across a mother with her children, corrupted FEMA workers, abandoned houses, and communities coming together to help each other.
I could tell it was written by a man, not that it was bad or anything, I could just tell. This book is considered as a Young Adult book but I’d say it’s for a mature audience. This book was disturbing in some parts, with all the gore, and violence. It was realistic and heartbreaking in other parts. If you’re like me, an animal lover and don't care to eat meat, this book will turn you against eating meat all together. I don’t normally cry in books but this one I did. It was hard to put down, the end of each chapter left me hanging, I didn’t want to stop, not even to sleep, it kept me up most of the night.
The second book Ashen Winter comes out in October of 2012, that means I have to wait until next year for the second book?!?

Tiger Eye (Dirk & Steele, #1)
Tiger Eye
by Marjorie M. Liu

Goodreads:
Long ago they roamed the earth -- dragons, tigers…shapeshifters -- men who wore the forms of beasts. Their world was magic. Now it is gone.

But some remain…

He looks out of place in Dela Reese's Beijing hotel room -- exotic and poignant, some mythic, tragic hero of an epic tale. With his feline yellow eyes, he's like nothing from her world,. Yet Dela has danced through the echo of his soul, and knows this warrior will obey her every command.

Hari has been used and abused for millennia. But he sees, upon his release from the riddle box, that this new mistress is different. There is a hidden power in Dela's eyes -- and with her, he may regain all that was lost to him. Where once he savaged, now he must protect; where before he knew only hatred, now he must embrace love. Dela is the key.

For Dela, he will risk all.

Star Crossed
Aries Rising
by Bonnie Hearn Hill

Goodreads:
Aquarius Logan McRae is a high school sophomore in Terra Bella Beach, CA and has been working all semester to impress her teachers in order to get into the summer writing camp she desperately wants to attend. But when this ordinary girl finds an extraordinary book, Fearless Astrology, her life is changed forever. Applying what she-s learned about the zodiac, she lands her own column in the school paper and a date with the hottest guy in school! But when Logan threatens to catch the members of a secret society called The Gears, who have been vandalizing school property by reading the stars, she quickly learns that she is in over her head. Will Logan be able to catch The Gears, save her love life, keep her newspaper column, and get into the writing camp of her dreams all through the use of astrology?

Wishlist Wednesday #1

Wishlist Wednesday, hosted by Pen to Paper, is a weekly meme that keeps track of the books that have been on you'r wishlist for a long time.

Warped

Goodreads: Tessa doesn't believe in magic. Or Fate. But there's something weird about the dusty unicorn tapestry she discovers in a box of old books. She finds the creature woven within it compelling and frightening. After the tapestry comes into her possession, Tessa experiences dreams of the past and scenes from a brutal hunt that she herself participated in. When she accidentally pulls a thread from the tapestry, Tessa releases a terrible centuries old secret. She also meets William de Chaucy, an irresistible 16th-century nobleman. His fate is as inextricably tied to the tapestry as Tessa's own. Together, they must correct the wrongs of the past. But then the Fates step in, making a tangled mess of Tessa's life. Now everyone she loves will be destroyed unless Tessa does their bidding and defeats a cruel and crafty ancient enemy.

Magic, unicorns, and time travel, yes please. I love books about time travel. And the cover is pretty awesome as well.

Avery didn’t protest again. Instead she quietly absorbed the words. Standing up, she backed away from the table.

Free Friday #10

Today Barns and Noble is offering The Journey Home by Michael Baron. Get it while you can if you want because it's only free for today. :)

The Journey Home

Goodreads:
Joseph, a man in his late thirties, awakens disoriented and uneasy in a place he doesn't recognize. Several people are near him when he opens his eyes, all strangers. All of them seem perfectly friendly, but none of them can explain to him how he got there. They offer him a delicious meal and pleasant conversation in a beautifully decorated room. This would be a very nice experience if not for one thing: Joseph doesn't know where he is and he has no way to contact his wife, who he is sure is worried sick over him. Thanking the people for their hospitality, he leaves to make his way back home. The only problem is that whatever happened to him has stripped him of most of his memories. He knows he needs to get back to his wife, but he doesn't know how to find her. He sets out on a journey to find his home with no sense of where he's going and only the precious, indelible vision of the woman he loves to guide him.

Antoinette is an elderly woman in an assisted living facility. She’s spent the last six years there since her husband died, and most of those years have been happy. She enjoys the company of others in her situation and her son comes to visit often. But in recent months, she’s had a tougher and tougher time leaving her room. Her friends seem different to her and the world seems increasingly confusing. She spends an escalating amount of time on a journey inside her head. There, her body and mind haven’t betrayed her. There, she’s a young newlywed with a husband who dotes on her and an entire life of dreams to live. There, she is truly home.

Warren, Antoinette’s son, is a man in his early forties going through the toughest year of his life. His marriage ended, he lost his job, and in the past few months, his mother has gone from hale to increasingly hazy. Having trouble finding work, he spends more and more time by his mother’s bedside. But her lack of lucidity both frustrates and frightens him. With far too much time on his hands, he decides to try to recreate his memories of home by attempting to cook his mother’s greatest dishes using the rudimentary appliances available in her room. He finds the challenge surprisingly rewarding, especially because the only time he feels his mother is truly with him anymore is when she is eating the meals he prepares for her.

Joseph, Antoinette, and Warren are three people on different searches for home. How they find it, and how they connect with one another at this critical stage in each of their lives, is the foundation for a profound and deeply moving story.

It sounds interesting, it's now on my Nook.

Sleepless
Sleepless
by Cyn Balog

Goodreads:
Eron DeMarchelle isn't supposed to feel this connection. He is a Sandman, a supernatural being whose purpose is to seduce his human charges to sleep. Though he can communicate with his charges in their dreams, he isn't encouraged to do so. After all, becoming too involved in one human's life could prevent him from helping others get their needed rest.

But he can't deny that he feels something for Julia, a lonely girl with fiery red hair and sad dreams. Just weeks ago, her boyfriend died in a car accident, and Eron can tell that she feels more alone than ever. Eron was human once too, many years ago, and he remembers how it felt to lose the one he loved. In the past, Eron has broken rules to protect Julia, but now, when she seems to need him more than ever, he can't reach her. Eron's time as a Sandman is coming to a close, and his replacement doesn't seem to care about his charges. Worse, Julia is facing dangers she doesn't recognize, and Eron, as he transitions back to being human, may be the only one who can save her. . . .

Even once they've become human again, Sandmen are forbidden to communicate with their charges. But Eron knows he won't be able to forget Julia. Will he risk everything for a chance to be with the girl he loves?

Cyn Balog's follow-up to Fairy Tale has more wit, more supernatural delights, and more star-crossed romance! Teen girls will love this story of a Sandman who falls in love with his human charge.

I don't know when I got this book, but it sounds really good. It's an ebook, I would rather read a printed book rather than an ebook, but I'll get around to reading it someday.

Tankborn

Tankborn

Tankborn

Karen Sandler

384 pages

Lee & Low Books

Goodreads:
Best friends Kayla and Mishalla know they will be separated for their Assignments. They are GENs, Genetically Engineered Non-humans, and in their strict caste system, GENs are at the bottom rung of society. GENs are gestated in a tank and sent to work as slaves as soon as they reach age fifteen.
When Kayla is Assigned to care for Zul Manel, the patriarch of a trueborn family, she finds secrets and surprises; not least of which is her unexpected friendship with Zuls great-grandson. Meanwhile, the children that Mishalla is Assigned to care for are being stolen in the middle of the night.
After weeks of toiling in their Assignments, mystifying circumstances enable Kayla and Mishalla to reunite. Together they hatch a plan to save the disappearing children. Yet can GENs really trust humans? Both girls must put their lives and hearts at risk to crack open a sinister conspiracy, revealing secrets no one is ready to face.

Thanks to NetGalley and Lee & Low Books for letting me read and review this book.

The beginning was kind of slow for me; I think it was the uniquely spelled words that slowed me down a little, but after the first couple of pages it quickly picked up.
This story takes place sometime in the future and is set on a planet called Loka, which closely resembles Earth. Kayla and her best friend, Mishalla, are GENs, Genetically Engineered Non-humans, GENs are not born but made. They are the lowest class in the social system. With trueborns being the highest and the lowborns  being the middle of the system. What’s the purpose of GENs? To serve as slaves to the trueborns.
When Kayla turns fifteen she is assigned as a caregiver to a trueborn elderly man, while Mishalla is assigned to taking care of orphan lawborn children. When the lowborn children start to disappear; she  puts her life at risk to find out what’s happening to them.
Tankborn is a great dystopian novel that any science fiction fan would love, it was fast paced and has a lot of twist and turns in it that I didn’t see coming. I would like to purchases the book just so I can re-read it sometime.

The Emerald Talisman (Talisman, #1)
The Emerald Talisman
by Brenda Pandos

Goodreads: To be normal, sixteen-year-old Julia Parker would shed her empathic gift in a second. Life has been difficult since her mother's mysterious disappearance ten years earlier - an event she witnessed, but can't remember. Julia's situation becomes more complicated after a near death experience from a blood thirsty stalker. As high school students go missing it is clear there is a connection to her own experience--past and present. Someone has to stop the madness and a chance encounter with a creepy psychic foretells that only Julia is the key to stopping the madness, but it may require the life of the one she loves.

I love vampire books, I don't know why I haven't read this book yet.
